Dances are of old time
Contras, Rounds and Squares commonly known as 'Barn Dances'. Beginners are
welcome, each dance is taught before it's danced and early dances in the
evening are always beginner level. Music will not be live but the songs used
are proven dance tunes and are great to listen to in case you just want to
hear the music. These types of dances are of the nature that the more people
taking part the more fun it is for everybody. The dances are held at the Old Town Players Theatre and
Arts Center, 5th and Broadway in Vincennes. Due to the generosity of the Old
Town Players Theatre Group allowing free use of the dance floor and the music
and sound equipment already on hand by the members of the dance group
admission is FREE.
The dances are called by a caller and the whole
routine is practiced before each dance is called. You always get a chance to
dance with everyone of the opposite gender each dance. Everyone is also urged
to change partners for each dance. Dress is casual with comfortable shoes a
must. Two or three local people will be calling the dances- Ruthie Gilmore
Strong, Julie St John, and Ron Ackman with some possible guest callers at
times. Music is lively Early American, Irish, Cajun and possibly other music
that will fit. Dances normally last 2 hours with the easiest dances first. If
you are a beginner be sure to be there at the start (also to get some pre
dance practice). The dictionary definition of 'Barn Dance' is a dance using
contras and squares. Since the group has had little or no previous experience
with Barn Dances they were quite surprised (and pleased) to learn this. The
advantage of contra over squares is that contra lines up with facing lines
(you have a partner) and any number of twos can dance as opposed to groups of
eight in a square. Some of the moves are swings, do-si-dos, allamands, gypsys,
promenades, groups of four down the floor and back, grand rights and lefts,
box the nat and on and on.
If you are between 8 and 80 and
like to dance to
rousing old time music plan to come dance with us.
